Subject: The HoCo Blue Pinky Project at CRES
On Monday, April 7, 2013, we participated in a Pledge & Paint Campaign that empowers students to stand up to bullying. During recess times, students were informed of The HoCo Blue Pinky Project along with strategies to reinforce the important role of the bystander. We  also covered our own “Bulldogs Aren’t Bullies” pledge that we follow at CRES.
As a culminating activity, students were offered the opportunity to paint their pinky fingernail blue or wear a blue wristband to show their commitment to the project.
We encourage you to talk with your children about this important activity.
For more information about the project, read below:
The HoCo Blue Pinky Project is a new grassroots project led by Jaki Ulman, in partnership with StandUp HoCo – Howard County’s community-based campaign to end bullying. Inspired by the work of Mean Stinks and Gang Up for Good, this effort is designed to raise awareness of bullying among young girls. Because we know that girls are more likely than boys to experience cyberbullying, rumor-spreading, and social exclusion, the project challenges members of our community to stand up for one another and promote respect. Although, the research shows that girls engage in this behavior more often than boys, we feel this activity will be beneficial to all students.
Participating in the project is simple: Paint your pinky blue and make a “pinky promise” to stand up to bullying. Post your blue pinky pictures to the StandUp HoCo Facebook page with a short description of how you will help to prevent bullying. You can also post photos on Instagram and Twitter, using the hashtag #HoCoBluePinky. StandUp HoCo will share submitted photos throughout the month and reconnect with participants about future events and opportunities to take part in the campaign.
