Summer Time Facts Activities

  • Beanbag Toss – Draw with chalk or on sand a box with about 9 numbers.  The child can toss two beanbags or rocks into the box and find the sum, difference, or product.  Alternative ways include tossing one beanbag and then add/subtract/multiply or divide a set number.
  • Addition/Subtraction/Multiplication War – Divide a deck or cards.  Each player flips a card and the first person to find the sum/difference/product wins the cards. Alternative ways include flipping a single card and then add/subtract/multiply or divide a set number.
  • I Spy Facts – Child or parents sees a two sets of something like two beach chairs and three beach towels then says “I spy 2 + 3.”  The child then says “I know 2 + 3 = 5, it might be….” Then they have to find two and three of something. Or “I spy 3 beach chairs, can you spy 4 times that amount?”  The child would then say “I know 3 X 4 = 12, I spy 12 buckets.”
  • Car Ride Fun – I spy in the car with numbers you see on signs, license plates, or different vehicles.  Various ways include spying numbers, looking for facts and their related facts (I see 2 + 5 which equals 7, then someone else needs to find 7 – 5 = 2 or I see 3 X 5 = 15, then someone else needs to find 15 divided by 5 equals 3), adding/subtracting 10 to speed limit signs, what is the speed limit divisible by.
  • Dominos
    • Domino Doubles – Child searches for dominoes that have a double and write the corresponding addition and related subtraction equation (e.g., a domino with 4 dots on one side and 4 dots on the other side is represented by 4 + 4 = 8 and 8 – 4 = 4).
    • Domino Tens –Child searches for dominoes that have a total of 10 dots and write the corresponding addition and related subtraction equations (e.g., a domino with 4 dots on one side and 6 dots on the other side is represented by 4 + 6 = 10 and 6 + 4 = 10 and 10 – 4 = 6 and 10 – 6 =4).
    • Domino Facts – Pull out a domino create a match and add/subtract/multiply.  Additionally, have students record related facts.  Example: (domino with 2 dots and 3 dots:
      • 2+3 = 5, 3+2 = 5, 5-3 = 2, 5-2 = 3
      • 2x3 = 6, 3x2 = 6, 62 = 3, 6
  • Fact Take Home Games
    • Counter Ideas – pebbles, shells, Cheerios, or checkers
    • Sums of Ten – Fill Ten and Squares
    • Doubles – Squares and Halves Race
    • Multiplication: 4 in a Row
    • Burst the Balloons- Division game
